Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has said INEC chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has reenacted what disgraced ex-president Ibrahim Babangida did to Nigerians in June 1993.

The fight for democracy will go on until voters’ votes are counted and electorates get to enjoy the results of their votes, according to Adebanjo in an interview with Arise TV.

“June 12 was primarily for voters to demonstrate that their votes would be counted because, according to the son of Abiola, it was the first time that people in this country cast ballots without regard to their race or religion. Mind you, I’m not sure if anyone will remember that Afenifere (NADECO then) and Abiola are not supporters of ours and don’t belong to our party.

“But because he won the election legitimately, we backed him, but Mahmood has done for us now what Babangida did for us before. Because of this, I argued that we had not learned our lesson; we are experiencing this issue because you allow votes to be counted. Because of this, I remarked, “The fight goes on until you permit voters to reap the benefits of their votes and votes to count.”

The June 12 election was declared invalid by former military president Ibrahim Babangida, which resulted in widespread protests across the nation from voters opposed to the annulment of the freest, fairest, and most peaceful election ever held, which was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Adebanjo also argued that federalism should be restored for Nigeria to experience peace and tranquility.
