Former Governor of Sokoto State and current Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has reaffirmed that the emerging opposition coalition is dedicated to rescuing Nigeria from deteriorating governance, rather than pushing any individual’s presidential ambition.
Speaking in Sokoto after being warmly welcomed by a large crowd of supporters following his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Tambuwal praised the professionalism displayed by the agency during his recent interrogation. However, he stressed that Nigeria’s challenges far exceed individual legal inquiries.
“I remain committed to democracy, the rule of law, and good governance. No agency can make me abandon these principles. What is going on in this country is not right. That is why I left the APC in 2018 — and the reasons are even more valid today,” Tambuwal said.
The senator criticized the current administration’s handling of national issues, particularly insecurity, economic instability, and declining public welfare, describing governance under the current leadership as lacking “a human face.”
He expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, especially in failing to recruit more security personnel despite growing threats to national safety.
Addressing speculation that the coalition’s purpose is to promote former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, Tambuwal dismissed the claims.
“This coalition is not about any individual. It is about rescuing Nigeria. PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, and other political forces are uniting to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative,” he said.
Tambuwal disclosed that the coalition will soon present a comprehensive policy roadmap focused on tackling insecurity, revitalizing the economy, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life.
He also recalled his earlier opposition to the sudden removal of fuel subsidies without protective measures.
“When I was Speaker, I warned against removing subsidies without a framework to protect the people. It was done unilaterally, and now Nigerians are paying the price,” he stated.
Calling on citizens to rally behind leaders committed to genuine reform, Tambuwal assured that the opposition coalition is committed to delivering a model of governance defined by compassion, competence, and accountability.
