Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South at the National Assembly, has warned President Bola Tinubu not to be distracted by politicians switching to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He urged the president to focus on improving security and the welfare of Nigerians, cautioning that political distractions could cost him in the next election and send him back to Lagos.
In an interview with Channels Television, Ndume highlighted the ongoing challenges in the fight against insurgency and pointed out serious gaps in military preparedness.
He explained that while some politicians are defecting, ordinary voters are staying loyal. He said the government should prioritize protecting the country and helping citizens instead of worrying about political manoeuvres ahead of 2027.
Ndume outlined major weaknesses in the military’s fight against insurgents. He said soldiers face hit-and-run attacks without proper support. They lack adequate surveillance, night vision equipment, and armoured vehicles. Task force battalions are sent out without essential backup, and there are no standby helicopters in key areas. According to him, these gaps make it difficult to protect Nigerians effectively.
He also agreed with the Chief of Defence Staff that local communities need to play a bigger role in security. Ndume pointed out that many insurgents in his area come from the communities themselves. He said empowering residents to defend themselves could greatly reduce attacks, stressing that the government cannot handle security alone.
On Tinubu’s performance, Ndume acknowledged some shortcomings but urged moving beyond political blame. He emphasized the need for proper leadership and execution. Soldiers must be fully equipped, and promises must turn into real protection, as bullets do not care about political parties and strike indiscriminately.
