In a recent video that has gained traction on social media, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) during the 2023 elections, expressed his willingness to serve as a running mate to Peter Obi of the Labour Party, provided certain conditions are met.

This marks a notable shift in Kwankwaso’s stance, as discussions about a potential joint ticket were previously dismissed. In 2023, there was considerable anticipation surrounding the idea of Kwankwaso teaming up with Obi, given Obi’s popularity as a former governor of Anambra State. However, Kwankwaso initially proposed that Obi should consider being his running mate, a suggestion that Obi declined, citing his stronger position within the Labour Party.

Both candidates contested the elections separately, with Obi finishing third, garnering 6,101,533 votes, while Kwankwaso came in fourth with 1,496,687 votes, winning in 38 out of 44 local government areas in Kano State.

Despite his past claims of holding the keys to Nigeria’s potential, Kwankwaso’s recent remarks indicate a shift towards collaboration with Obi to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he has frequently criticized. He stated, “I’m willing to deputise Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met,” emphasizing his political stature and past achievements as governor.

“I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically; I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder, and I performed better than him when I was governor,” Kwankwaso asserted. He added that he is open to discussions with Obi and other Labour Party leaders, contingent on establishing mutual trust.

As of now, the media team representing Peter Obi has yet to respond to Kwankwaso’s latest statements.
