Buba Galadima, a key figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has offered critical commentary on Nigeria’s political trajectory leading to the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Galadima addressed the state of governance under the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and rebutted recent comments by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Galadima dismissed the APC’s suggestion that there is no presidential vacancy until 2031, following President Bola Tinubu’s hypothetical completion of a second term. Instead, he argued that Nigerian voters are poised to seek alternatives in 2027 due to widespread dissatisfaction with the APC’s governance.
“What the people feel now in their body will determine the way they vote in 2027,” Galadima remarked, underscoring the importance of performance-based evaluations over regional zoning in future elections. He reiterated his belief that leadership should be judged by merit and not geographical origin.
Allegations Against the APC
Galadima accused the APC of attempting to stifle political competition by compromising opposition leaders. He claimed emissaries from the ruling party are offering billions to party leaders to prevent credible candidates from emerging. These tactics, he warned, undermine democratic integrity and reflect the APC’s desperation to maintain power.
Describing the APC’s governance as a “monumental disaster,” Galadima criticized its failure to deliver on campaign promises, predicting that these shortcomings will contribute to the party’s reckoning in 2027.
Call for Democratic Vigilance
Despite his critique, Galadima expressed hope in Nigeria’s democratic processes. He encouraged citizens to resist intimidation and participate actively in ensuring free and fair elections. “Nigerians must demand accountability and vote for leaders based on performance, not propaganda or coercion,” he urged.
Akume’s Remarks on Tinubu’s Presidency
In contrast, George Akume recently declared unwavering support for President Tinubu, stating that there is “no vacancy in the presidency” until 2031. During an appearance on TVC Politics, Akume championed Tinubu’s ongoing tax reforms as visionary steps toward revamping Nigeria’s economy. He called on aspiring presidential candidates to wait until Tinubu completes a second term before making their bids.
The Road to 2027
As Nigeria heads toward a pivotal election year, the contrasting views of Galadima and Akume highlight a brewing battle for the nation’s political future. While the APC focuses on consolidating its hold on power, opposition figures like Galadima are mobilizing support for change, promising a contentious and high-stakes political contest.
