Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on top politicians who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to return to the fold, stressing the importance of unity and shared purpose within the party.
Speaking during the PDP South West Zonal Caucus Meeting held on July 11, 2025, in Ibadan, Governor Makinde made a passionate appeal to former party leaders and stakeholders, emphasizing that internal challenges should not justify total abandonment.
“You can’t abandon your house because of a leaking roof,” the Governor said, addressing the coalition politicians directly. “The PDP, like any enduring institution, may face structural challenges, but it remains built on solid foundations. It is our collective duty to repair what’s broken, reinforce our base, and keep this house standing strong for the people of Nigeria.”
Makinde, a key member of the G5 — a group of influential PDP governors including former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike — noted that only he and members of the G5 remain committed to the party amid the growing shift to other political coalitions.
He urged PDP members now operating within opposition alliances to rethink their decisions and return, describing their defection as abandoning a home that still holds great promise. “Temporary setbacks must not break our resolve. Instead of walking away, let us fix the roof together,” he said.
The governor highlighted that true leadership involves facing adversity head-on and strengthening institutions for the benefit of future generations. He also praised the enduring commitment of loyal PDP members and expressed readiness to work collaboratively with party leaders and stakeholders to ensure success in future elections.
Governor Makinde concluded with a call to action: “Let us stay focused on our vision of progress, unity, and national development. Together, we can rebuild and re-energize the PDP for the betterment of our country.”
