Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has affirmed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will rally behind whichever candidate emerges from its primaries to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Lawal made this statement during an interview with journalists following the 3rd expanded meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North) held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
His remarks come amid growing momentum around a political coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which recently adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming election.
Prominent figures in the coalition include Atiku, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. Several of them have already shown interest in contesting under the ADC banner.
Addressing how the party’s presidential flagbearer would be chosen, Lawal emphasized the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy:
“The ADC is a party founded on democratic principles. We will conduct proper congresses and conventions to elect our representatives. Whoever emerges whether from the North, South, East, or West—will receive full support from the ADC and the Northern Political Consultative Group.”
When asked whether votes would truly count in the next election, Lawal was unequivocal:
“Nobody in the ADC believes votes won’t count. They do, and we will ensure they do. We’re prepared to resist and defeat any form of electoral malpractice. The ADC is united, resilient, and ready.”
He explained that the Abuja meeting was called to discuss challenges specific to the North and explore strategic responses as a political family.
“This administration has shown little interest in resolving the North’s issues whether it’s infrastructure, peace, or security. So, we must take the initiative ourselves to work toward lasting solutions,” he added.
Lawal reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to forming a government that will prioritize the needs and concerns of Northern Nigeria while upholding national unity and democratic values.
