Top Nigerian politician Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has refused to give direct answers on two major issues shaping the 2027 presidential election, raising fresh uncertainty inside the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the next political battle.
Speaking during an interview with German DW Hausa, Kwankwaso said the party has not reached a final decision on critical matters concerning the 2027 election.
When asked whether he supports zoning the NDC presidential ticket to the South, Kwankwaso avoided giving a clear position. He said the issue has sparked serious debate within the party and added that members should wait for the official decision of the NDC leadership.
Kwankwaso was also questioned about growing speculation that he could serve as running mate to Peter Obi in the next election. The former Kano governor again declined to give a direct answer, saying he would not comment on the matter for now and that Nigerians should wait for the party’s final position.
He also revealed that despite leaving the ADC coalition, his camp would continue holding talks with opposition leaders across the country. According to him, the discussions are aimed at exploring the possibility of building a united political front capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
His comments have added to the growing confusion surrounding the NDC’s strategy for 2027.
The uncertainty became stronger after senior political figure Buba Galadima stated during an interview with Arise TV that the party had already zoned its presidential ticket to the South. However, Galadima also called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to join the NDC and contest in the party’s presidential primary.
The mixed signals have triggered fresh questions over whether the NDC has truly settled its zoning arrangement or if internal disagreements are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar has dismissed rumours claiming he has ruled out joining the NDC. In a recent statement, the former vice president denied the speculation, keeping open the possibility of future political talks ahead of the 2027 election.
