Former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa has challenged President Bola Tinubu to end the killings and insecurity across Northern Nigeria from today until January 15, 2027, saying you cannot give north insecurity and want their votes.

According to Bafarawa, said if the president succeeds he will vote for him and encourage his people to do the same.

Bafarawa made the remarks in interviews with Hausa media outlets FRI and RFI around late October 2026. He stated that his only condition for supporting Tinubu in the 2027 election is the restoration of peace and full normalcy in Sokoto State and other parts of the North.

He explained that the president has power money and security forces at his disposal so even one month or three months would be enough to change the insecurity situation in the region. He added that time is no longer on Tinubu’s side.

Bafarawa said he wants no campaign money or personal benefits. What he wants is for Tinubu to ensure peace so that markets, schools, farming and other livelihood activities can return to communities allowing residents to live normally again.

He pointed out that insecurity has stopped children from going to school and prevented villagers from going to their farms. Many towns have been completely sacked or deserted by attacks. He described this situation as unacceptable and said anyone who denies people education denies them life.

Bafarawa who is not a member of the All Progressives Congress said he would vote for and support any candidate including Tinubu who restores peace to the North. He also said he is ready to personally campaign for the president from now until the election if the security problems are fixed.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are set for January 16 2027. Bafarawa governed Sokoto State from 1999 to 2007 and has recently focused on youth empowerment after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party. He noted that he has met Tinubu only once since the president took office during an encounter at a mosque.
