In a significant ruling, Justice Amina Aliyu of the Kano High Court has issued an order prohibiting the five dethroned emirs of Kano from presenting themselves as emirs.

According to reports from DAILY NIGERIAN, Aminu Bayero, the dethroned emir of Kano, has been asserting himself as emir and residing in the Nassarawa royal residence. This follows a federal high court order obtained by one of his title holders, Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi, which prevents the Kano State Government from implementing a new law that led to the monarchs’ dethronement.

The lawsuit was initiated by the Kano State Attorney General, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the House of Assembly against the five emirs. On Monday, while issuing the order, Justice Aliyu barred the five emirs from presenting themselves as emirs.

The court granted an interim injunction restraining the defendants, their servants, privies, or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from presenting themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye until the motion on notice filed by the Applicants is heard and determined.

The court further ordered the Commissioner of Police in Kano State to immediately take control of the Emir of Kano’s palace located at State Road Kano and evict the first defendant/respondent from the palace until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated May 24, 2024.

The court also restrained the defendants from presenting themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye in the interest of peace in Kano until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The court ordered that the defendants be served through the office of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, who is to ensure the immediate implementation of the court’s order in the interest of justice.

The motion on notice dated May 24, 2024, has been adjourned to June 11, 2024, for hearing, as stated in the order.
