The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is in support of all candidates of the Labour Party (LP), including its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, the nation’s umbrella union’s President Ayuba Wabba has said.

The LP, when it was created, was viewed as the workers’ party.

But overtime, it became the last resort for politicians to contest elections.

For instance, the leading lights in the party as of today are aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This has left many wondering if there was still any link between organised labour and the party.

Wabba, who announced this while speaking with The Nation, said organised labour remained the owner of the political party established for workers.

In a short message, he said: “We own the Labour Party and we (are) fully in support of our candidates.”

But leaders of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been passive on the political scene.

They have not been seen openly supporting Obi.

Aside attending a national retreat of the LP in Abuja in September, 2022, the leadership of organised Labour has been passive.

Speaking during the retreat, Wabba had said: “We have structures. Human beings are the structures. We must activate it. We are activating all our structures in all the 774 local government areas and we have over 12 million members that will vote.” (The Nation)
