Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP is urging President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed and the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to withdraw the last warning and threat to revoke the licences of some erring broadcast stations.
The commission had also threatened to shut down the stations over their coverage of elections and post-election matters.
SERAP says if the requested action was not taken within 48 hours of the receipt and/or publication of its letter, it would take appropriate legal actions to compel the Federal Government to comply with its request in the interest of the public.
The NBC had, last week, threatened to revoke the licences of broadcast stations and shut them down if they continue to allow unpatriotic individuals on their platforms particularly in the post-2023 presidential election.
SERAP recalled that the Director General of the NBC, Balarabe Ilelah on March 7, 2023, reportedly gave the commission’s last warning to broadcast stations.
