We, Abian’s in the Diaspora (Europe), having monitored the just concluded governorship elections all over Abia State, we make these brief but firm findings and resolutions.
- That we sent our representatives from Europe to all the 17 local government areas in Abia State to monitor the elections.
- That the situation in Obingwa was very horrific and later became life threatening because, whereas the number of accredited voters were less than 24,000 votes, thugs were used to invade the collation Centre to disrupt the collation process and attempts were made to force INEC officials to accept false results to declare the PDP governorship candidate winner in the local government with more than 80,000 votes.
- When the INEC officials refused to do their bidding under duress, they (PDP thugs) tried to induce them with financial compromise which the INEC officials would not subscribe to. After attempts at compromising the INEC officials through violent threats and financial inducement had failed, the frustrated thugs proceeded to become extremely violent and physically destructive to both election materials and the election workers themselves including our European monitors who were unavoidably in the line of fire.
- Now, there is an alleged attempt by the PDP to increase the already falsified votes from more than 80,000 to some 108,000 votes.
(a)This is completely false and not in any way, shape or form a true representation of the votes accredited or cast on the 18th day of March 2023 in Obingwa during the governorship election.
(b) There was violence which truncated even the actual voting process in many of the polling units after accreditation had taken place and the PDP discovered that the votes being cast would not go their way.
Given our interests in the development of Abia State as diasporas, we do make these resolutions.
(a) That the total number of accredited voters in Obingwa is a little above 23,000 voters
(b) That there was massive violence both at many polling units and the collation Centre which disrupted the process after accreditation, of which it is impossible to have a little above 23000 voters accredited, only to end up with more than 80,000 or even 108,000 actual votes cast.
To this end however, we strongly urge the INEC national and state electoral commission to immediately set aside the false Obingwa results as presented by the PDP and declare Dr. Alex Chioma Otti of the Labour Party as the duly and freely elected governor of Abia State, especially given that he has won more than 172000 votes cast statewide with a 94,000-vote margin of victory ahead of his closest rival in this just concluded election. Furthermore, he (Dr. Alex C Otti) has met the constitutional requirement of garnering at least 25% of votes cast in two thirds of the 17 local governments in Abia State.
Dr. Alex C. Otti has met the requirements to be declared the winner of this election and anything short of this will amount to truncating the will of Abia people whose hopes and aspirations will undoubtedly be smashed. INEC must as a matter of utmost urgency return Dr. Otti as governor elect without any delay.
