Gunmen have reportedly beheaded an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Aba, the commercial city of Abia state on Tuesday.

The unfortunate incident happened in Ndiegoro in the State.

Reports said the senior police officer was brutally murdered by the criminal elements in the wee hours of Tuesday with his head cut off before eloping with his gun and uniform.

Police source said the murder of the ASP might not be unconnected with the neutralization of the leader of the criminals during a gun battle on 23 of April.

The ragtag gunmen had on that fateful day opened fire the moment they sighted police operatives which warranted the gallant officers to give them a hot chase before they began to exchange gunfire.

News Band further gathered that the ring leader unable to stand the superior fire power of the police, jumped into Aba River in attempt to escape through the Ovom/Azumini link of the river before he was killed.

A resident who doesn’t want his name on print told our correspondent that the killing of the police ASP on Tuesday has sent many residents of East Street, Ngwa Road, Akpu Road, Ndoki Street, Etche Road, and Ulasi Road all within the Ndiegoro axis into panic as the criminals were said to have threatened that police and residents of the area would have no peace.

Meanwhile, Abia State police command is yet to issue a statement in respect to the development.
