FACT CHECK: Did INEC say election results won’t be transmitted via Irev?

On Friday, June 16, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Abiodun Owonikoko claimed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the buildup to the February 25 Presidential election, said it would not transmit results via Result Viewing Portal (Irev).

“Meet Owonikoko, SAN, the lawyer that claimed in Court today, that, via an article published on the Nigerian Tribune of February 23, 2023, INEC stated that it would no longer transmit election results to the IREV,” a Twitter user had tweeted on Thursday.

VERIFICATION

Checks by Parallel Facts revealed the report was misrepresentation of what INEC published on its verified Twitter handle dated Wednesday, November 16, 2022, barely 100 days to the February presidential poll.

According to the statement, The Independent National Electoral Commission said there would be uploading of results in real-time via the IRev – contradicting viral claim credited to its lawyer.

Also, the particular referenced report published on Tribune corroborated the aforementioned as there was no instance where the Commission said there won’t be electronic transmission of results via the IRev.

VERDICT

The claim is false and misleading.
