ECOWAS Commission has frowned at a reported move by coup plotters to bring charges of high treason against the President of the Republic of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.

This was contained in a press statement dated 14 August 2023 and issued in Abuja.

In the statement, ECOWAS said it learnt with stupefaction attempts to bring charges of high treason against Bazoum and condemned the move.

ECOWAS said that it represents yet another form of provocation and contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means.

“President Bazoum remains the democratically-elected President of the Republic of Niger recognized by ECOWAS and the international community,” the Commission stated.

It, therefore, condemned his illegal detention and called for his immediate release and reinstatement.
