As the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announces the temporary closure of Nigeria’s largest power generating station, Egbin Power Station, a looming blackout casts a shadow just days before Christmas.

The shutdown, attributed to essential maintenance to address a gas pipeline leak, will lead to a 676MW decrease in power supplied to the national grid for a duration of 72 hours.

In a statement released on Monday, December 18, the TCN clarified that the Egbin Power Station’s shutdown was initiated to facilitate repairs on a gas pipeline supplied by the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC). The three-day closure will impact the availability of bulk power delivered to distribution companies’ load centers.

The Egbin Power Plant, situated in Lagos and boasting an installed capacity of 1,320 MW, plays a critical role in contributing power to Nigeria’s national grid. The maintenance-related shutdown underscores the importance of addressing infrastructure issues to ensure the reliability of the country’s power supply.
