In a scathing critique, the Labour Party (LP) has accused President Bola Tinubu of delivering a New Year’s broadcast devoid of empathy and rife with hypocrisy.
The LP contends that Tinubu’s speech reflects the prevailing insincerity and lack of compassion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration he leads.
Tinubu’s nationwide address urged Nigerians to stand strong in the face of adversity, asserting, “Tough times never last. We are made for this period, never to flinch, never to falter.”
However, LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, vehemently disagreed, stating that the president’s speech exposed his helplessness in addressing pressing issues such as insecurity, crumbling infrastructure, economic decline, inflation, and the deteriorating Naira to Dollar exchange rate.
The LP criticized the glaring omission of any mention of alleged widespread looting of the nation’s resources by appointed officials and party leaders across various sectors.
The party questioned the wisdom behind decisions like the removal of fuel subsidies without a corresponding plan to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. They also questioned the utilization of millions from the nation’s dwindling foreign reserves for the climate change summit in Dubai.
Highlighting concerns about the erosion of democratic institutions under the APC administration, the LP called on the National Assembly to transcend party lines and uphold the spirit and letter of the constitution. As the nation grapples with critical challenges, the LP reiterated its call for prayers while emphasizing the need for a concerted effort to repair the damage inflicted on key institutions like the Judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In essence, the Labour Party’s critique sheds light on what they perceive as the shortcomings and questionable decisions of President Tinubu and the APC, framing their concerns as integral to the nation’s present and future well-being.
