Senator Kashim Shettima, the Vice President, announced on Friday that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to putting an end to the prevailing chaos in the South-East region.
This announcement came during the launch of the Peace in South-East Project (PISE-P) by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Benjamin Kalu, in the Bende local government area of Abia State.
Senator Shettima strongly condemned what he termed as self-serving criminals and certain individuals exploiting the security situation to further their mundane political agendas in the region. He highlighted Tinubu’s deep concern over the economic devastation inflicted by non-state actors since assuming leadership.
In his impassioned speech titled “Why We are all Umunna,” Shettima stressed Tinubu’s dedication to eliminating purveyors of falsehoods and propaganda that pose threats to Nigeria’s unity. He emphasized Tinubu’s determination to utilize all available resources to ensure that the peace being established in the region is genuine and not merely cosmetic.
“Tinubu is acutely aware that our commitment to Nigeria’s future remains incomplete as long as we grapple with the sinister operations of economic saboteurs who masquerade as advocates for the Ndi-Igbo. That’s why he’s determined to utilize all available resources to ensure that the peace we’re establishing in this region is not cosmetic,” Shettima declared.
The Vice President highlighted that the nefarious activities in the South-East are the work of self-serving criminals who do not represent the genuine interests of Ndi-Igbo or the entire nation. He dispelled the notion that terror groups holding the South-East hostage are creations of the region or Nigerians from other parts of the country.
“The problem we are here to solve as a community, as an Umunna, is a creation of self-serving criminals who do not represent the interests of the Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians. Mr. President knows this better than all of us, and that’s why he has never held any group accountable for the infractions of law-breaking individuals who identify as their members. This, I believe, is the democracy we have all chosen,” Shettima stated emphatically.
