The Nigerian Correctional Service has vehemently refuted recent media reports that alleged prisoners receive a mere N200 daily for food.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, clarified that inmates across all detention centers are, in fact, provided N750 per day for their meals. In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, Umar dismissed the claims as deceptive, inaccurate, and malicious.
Furthermore, the Correctional Service is actively pursuing approval for an increase in the feeding allowance to align with current economic conditions. The statement emphasized that the feeding allowance for inmates is transparent, with vendors receiving the approved amount upon successful supply completion. The contracts for ration supply are made public, and interested vendors can apply in accordance with the Public Procurement Act 2007.
The statement reassured the public that each custodial center has a ration committee overseeing the quality assurance of supply, preparation, and distribution to ensure inmates are fed within the approved budget. The authorities have consistently shown a commitment to enhancing inmates’ welfare, including their feeding, as well as empowering them through reformation and rehabilitation programs.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, has expressed an irrevocable commitment to work for the overall well-being of individuals in custody. The public is urged to dismiss the false reports and remain confident in the dedication of the Correctional Service to upholding standards and serving the nation. Genuine support from well-meaning Nigerians is appreciated and welcomed in this endeavor.
