President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.

The suspension comes amid allegations of diverting millions meant for vulnerable Nigerians.

Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale announced the suspension, stating that President Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, along with its affiliated agencies.

Dr. Betta Edu has been instructed to hand over her duties to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and cooperate fully with the investigating authorities during the probe.

In addition to the suspension, Tinubu has appointed a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. The panel’s mandate includes conducting a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programs.

The goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs to eliminate any institutional frailties and regain public confidence in the initiative, particularly for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households.
