Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action in the wake of alleged fraud within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The focal point of the controversy is the suspended Minister, Betta Edu, who is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The allegations stem from Edu’s request for funds to be deposited into a private account, coupled with documented evidence revealing her approval of flight ticket payments for herself and ministry staff to travel to Kogi State, despite the absence of an airport there. The trip, undertaken by road, has raised suspicions of fraudulent activities.

Expressing his concern over the misappropriation of funds intended for the impoverished, Obi emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, he stated, “I welcome the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Betta Edu, and subsequent directives for her investigation.”

Obi cautioned against the suspension being merely symbolic, urging a comprehensive inquiry to bring all guilty parties to justice. Drawing attention to the magnitude of the situation, he highlighted a parallel investigation into the previous minister’s alleged misappropriation of a staggering N37 billion, emphasizing a systemic issue within the ministry.

Suggesting that the ministry might function as a conduit for diverting public funds, Obi expressed his dismay, stating, “Equally worrisome and disgusting is the fact that the missing funds are meant for poverty alleviation in a time of severe suffering among the people.”

Characterizing the situation as both immoral and insensitive, Obi called for a systemic investigation into cases of fraud and corruption among high-ranking government officials.

He concluded by urging the government to prioritize the fight against public sector corruption with the severity it demands, resonating with the collective call of Nigerians for urgent action.
