In a momentous occasion, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, warmly welcomed Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to partake in the commissioning of the state’s pioneering power project.
Governor Otti took to his social media handle to express his excitement, highlighting the significance of the event.
“Earlier this morning, we had the presence of His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, who came to share in our joy as we are set to commission the Geometric Power Plant in Osisioma and several roads in Aba,” Otti shared.
The genesis of the Aba power plant dates back to 2004, marked by a visit from the late President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, upon the urging of Okonjo-Iweala, then a prominent figure. This visit served as a catalyst, exposing the immense economic and technological potential of the city of Aba.
Reflecting on the transformative visit, Nnaji, a key figure involved in the project, recounted, “Following the 2004 visit, both Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and Dr. Wolfensohn urged me to consider constructing a 50-megawatt power plant in Abia State, targeting manufacturers ranging from large-scale enterprises like the Star Paper Mill to the myriad of skilled artisans at the renowned Ariaria Market.”
Motivated by a desire to foster indigenous innovation and entrepreneurship, Nnaji embraced the proposal with enthusiasm. The decision to locate the plant in Aba, known for its ingenuity and industrial prowess, further fueled his determination.
