In a significant move to foster economic growth and empower women, Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, has announced plans to provide financial support to women entrepreneurs.

His administration aims to empower approximately 50 women per ward with a sum of N100,000 each, specifically to boost their businesses.

Governor Otti’s commitment to women’s empowerment aligns with his campaign promise to create wealth at the grassroots level. He recognizes the resilience and dedication of Nigerian women, both in their homes and workplaces. Describing them as an epitome of grace, knowledge, beauty, and strength, he emphasizes their substantial contributions to global economic, social, and political development.

Under the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Inspire Inclusion,” Governor Otti’s administration has taken deliberate steps to empower women. These include:

  1. Gender-Sensitive Leadership: Abia State’s administration has significantly increased the number of women appointed to strategic positions within the State Executive Council, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. Notably, women hold key roles in health, education, agriculture, and poverty alleviation.
  2. Supporting Livelihoods: The state actively participates in the Nigeria for Women Project (NFWP) by providing counterpart funds. This project aims to improve livelihoods for women in targeted areas of Abia and Nigeria. It focuses on influencing gender norms, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing women’s access to critical life, business, and technical skills.
  3. Zero-Interest Loans: Governor Otti has approved immediate disbursement of funds at zero interest to women entrepreneurs and small-scale operators in rural areas. Each ward is expected to benefit from this initiative, with no less than 50 women receiving financial support.

By empowering women economically, Abia State takes a significant step toward inclusive development and prosperity. Governor Otti expresses gratitude to Abia women for their unwavering support and faith in his leadership. Their dedication contributes to shaping a brighter future for the state and its citizen
