President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern vow that the perpetrators behind the ambush that claimed the lives of 16 Nigerian soldiers during a rescue mission in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, will face justice.

Expressing profound grief over the tragic loss of the soldiers, including a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and twelve soldiers, Tinubu condemned the incident as a “heinous crime.” The attack, which also resulted in the death of a civilian, occurred on Thursday as the soldiers responded to a crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.

In his statement, Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, hailing their heroism and patriotism. He emphasized the nation’s obligation to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for Nigeria’s safety and unity.

Tinubu declared, “The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished,” affirming that any assault on the armed forces is a direct assault on the nation itself. He empowered the Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff to ensure the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.

Reacting to the tragedy, Senator AbdulAziz Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, denounced the “massacre” and pledged unwavering support for the military in holding the perpetrators accountable. He emphasized the Senate Committee’s commitment to assisting in investigations and legal proceedings to ensure justice for the fallen heroes.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and presidential candidate of NNPP in the 2023 election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso urged the military to exercise restraint in their response to the incident, expressing deep concern over the loss of the gallant personnel of the Nigerian Army in Okuama Community of Delta State.
