President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step by ordering a halt to all publicly-funded international travels for ministers, officials, and agency heads, as stated in a letter from his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, directed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The decision to impose restrictions on foreign trips stems from President Tinubu’s concerns over the escalating travel costs borne by various government entities and the imperative for cabinet members and agency heads to concentrate on their core mandates for efficient service delivery. The letter underscores the necessity for prudent fiscal management amidst prevailing economic challenges.
“I am writing to communicate Mr. President’s directive to place a temporary ban on all public-funded international trips for all Federal Government officials at all levels, for an initial period of three (3) months from April 1, 2024,” stated Tinubu’s Chief of Staff. “This temporary measure is aimed at cost reduction in governance and intended as a cost-saving measure without compromising government functions.”
During the embargo, any proposed overseas official trips necessitate explicit approval from President Tinubu at least two weeks prior to departure, provided they are deemed “absolutely necessary.”
This austerity measure follows closely on the heels of a call by Peter Obi, Tinubu’s challenger in the 2023 presidential election, to halt all foreign travel for government officials until pressing issues such as insecurity are adequately addressed. Obi argued that the prevailing security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings, coupled with recent incidents in the Federal Capital Territory, underscore the urgency for decisive action from leadership.
At the heart of Obi’s plea lies the disappointment in the perceived failure of successive administrations to effectively address critical issues such as security, economy, and corruption. He urged the government to fulfill its campaign promises and intensify efforts to tackle the rampant violence and insecurity plaguing the nation, emphasizing the detrimental impact such crises have on foreign investment and partnerships.
The implementation of the travel ban reflects a concerted effort by the Tinubu administration to rein in expenditure, redirect focus towards domestic priorities, and demonstrate commitment to addressing pressing national concerns.
