Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, shared a profound message via his social media handle, stating, “We are all prisoners.”
On Easter, Obi visited the Onitsha Correctional Centre, where he celebrated mass with the inmates, alongside the Archbishop of Onitsha Catholic Archdiocese, His Grace, Most Rev Valerian Okeke. During his interaction with the inmates, Obi emphasized that every citizen is metaphorically a prisoner in our nation, urging all to seek divine mercy and assistance.
Given the myriad challenges Nigeria is grappling with, Obi stressed the need for every Nigerian to strive for their liberation through righteous actions and contributions to national development. He encouraged the inmates, who were inspired by the Archbishop’s homily and their presence, to use their time in the correctional centre to improve their lives, acquire new skills, and commit to righteousness, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society upon their release.
Obi expressed his gratitude to Archbishop Okeke for his significant contributions to humanity, particularly his substantial support to the inmates, including the establishment of a Skill Centre to aid their personal development. He also extended his appreciation to the Controller of Prisons, Anambra Command, and the Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of Onitsha Prisons, Sunday Igwe, along with their teams, for their commendable efforts in ensuring the inmates’ safety.
In his closing remarks, Obi prayed for divine intervention to liberate everyone from their respective challenges as we collectively strive towards a New Nigeria.
