The Nigerian Immigration Service has recently announced a new requirement for passport renewal applications, stating that a State of origin document is now mandatory.

This update was shared on the Nigerian Immigration Service’s official platform on Saturday, 20th April 2024.

According to the announcement, individuals applying for passport renewal must provide a document that links them to a specific local government area within Nigeria to validate their Nigerian citizenship. This document, referred to as the “indigenship document,” is one of the key requirements for applicants to authenticate their citizenship status.

The Nigerian Immigration Service clarified that applicants do not need to physically travel to their state of origin to obtain the indigenship document. Many states have established liaison offices in different regions for this purpose. For instance, Anambra State has liaison offices in Lagos (Eti-Osa) and Abuja (Asokoro) that are authorized to issue these documents.

Emphasizing the importance of the documentation process, the NIS highlighted that every document requested from passport applicants has been carefully considered and is supported by relevant laws and policies approved by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior.

In conclusion, the Nigerian Immigration Service reassured applicants that obtaining the indigenship document does not require a visit to their state of origin, as liaison offices in various states can facilitate this process efficiently.
