Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), recently revealed that an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket, which was sealed due to allegations of discrimination against Nigerians, was found to have all its products priced in Chinese yen, a clear violation of Nigerian law.
In an interview with Channels TV, Abdullahi disclosed that the supermarket, located within the China General Chamber of Commerce, was not only discriminating against Nigerians but was also violating the country’s currency regulations. He stated that all products in the supermarket were priced and sold exclusively in yen.
Abdullahi further confirmed that the supermarket was discriminatory in its practices, as it denied entry to Nigerian residents living in the same estate. He emphasized that such practices were against the law in Nigeria, where all products should be sold in the local currency, and businesses should be open to all residents.
The FCCPC has taken action against these violations. The supermarket owner has been instructed to display a notice allowing everyone to shop in the supermarket. Discussions are ongoing to rectify the situation.
However, Abdullahi warned that there would be consequences for such discriminatory practices. The FCCPC plans to impose sanctions on the supermarket, including a fine equivalent to 10% of the company’s sales turnover from the previous year. He stressed that discriminatory behavior leads to consequences, and the commission is prepared to enforce the full extent of the law.

The commission’s Director for Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, stated that the action was in response to a viral video alleging discrimination.
