On Children’s Day, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, expressed his support for Nigerian children through a post on his X handle.

He highlighted the importance of celebrating Children’s Day and reaffirmed his commitment to the well-being and development of Nigerian children.

“This day, dedicated to celebrating Nigerian children, offers us a moment to focus on our future leaders. It reminds us of the necessity to invest in their growth, nurture their dreams, and provide them with access to quality education, healthcare, and a secure environment,” Obi wrote.

He emphasized that every Nigerian child deserves a safe and supportive environment to thrive. Obi underscored the importance of investing in key developmental areas to ensure the bright future of society.

Addressing the persistent issue of child labour, Obi cited a National Bureau of Statistics report revealing that 39.2% of Nigerian children are engaged in child labour, with 22.9% involved in hazardous work. He highlighted the alarming statistic that four out of every ten children in Nigeria are trapped in child labour, endangering both the children and the future of society.

“In tackling child labour, we must focus on lifting more Nigerians out of poverty and ensuring the respect of every child’s rights,” he stated.

Obi also encouraged parents, guardians, teachers, and benefactors to continue their efforts in raising responsible citizens. He urged children to take their moral and educational formation seriously.

Reaffirming his vision for a New Nigeria, Obi concluded, “We remain committed to building a safe, secure, and productive nation for our children, where they can fully and freely explore their potentials. It is possible.”
