Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law.
In a heartfelt statement via his X handle, Kalu emphasized the significance of this legislative achievement for the region known for its enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Kalu heralded the SEDC Bill’s signing as not just a legislative victory, but a historic milestone for the South-East geopolitical zone. He highlighted that the commission, funded by allocations from the Federation Account, will oversee the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructure damaged during the civil war. Additionally, it will address ecological issues and other developmental challenges across the South-East States, including Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, Kalu noted that the country’s transition from the civil war 54 years ago was marked by the three “Rs”: Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction. While reconciliation and rehabilitation have been pursued, the President’s assent to the SEDC Bill signifies the commencement of complete reconstruction in the South-East.
Kalu conveyed the deep appreciation of all Ndi Igbo (Igbo people) from the South-East zone. He underscored the momentous nature of this occasion, filled with hope and determination. The Deputy Speaker assured that the commission would work tirelessly to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the South-East people, advocating for continued positive attention and development for the zone.
In his statement, Kalu called on Nigerians to reaffirm their values and commitments, measuring them against the legacy of their forebearers and the promise to future generations. He emphasized the ongoing need for efforts to support workers adapting to a rapidly changing economy, parents providing for their children, and young people striving for a better future.
Beyond legislative efforts, Kalu mentioned that his colleagues from the South-East have initiated the Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), a non-governmental special purpose vehicle aimed at addressing regional insecurity through non-kinetic measures. This initiative seeks to provide thematic and programmatic leadership for effective implementation.
Kalu also urged Nigerians to trust in the reform process and refrain from heeding calls for protest. He highlighted that the current administration’s reforms, though requiring time, would eventually result in reversing inflation, stabilizing the economy, and creating massive employment opportunities through industrialization and the efforts of organizations like the SEDC.
He concluded by reminding Nigerians that their strength lies in unity, shared dreams, and collective efforts. Together, they can build a Nigeria where every child has a decent shot at life and the doors of opportunity remain open to all. With determination and collaborative spirit, he affirmed that Nigeria can and will do better.
“Thank you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Kalu concluded.
