Enugu North Senator, Okey Ezea, has expressed optimism that the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Act, recently signed by President Bola Tinubu, will address the region’s longstanding infrastructure challenges.

According to Senator Ezea, the establishment of the SEDC also promises to mitigate the feelings of marginalization that have persisted among South East indigenes since the end of the civil war.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday, the Labour Party senator emphasized the necessity for substantial funding of the commission to ensure its effectiveness. He highlighted critical issues such as erosion and deteriorating roads, which demand urgent attention through the intervention of the SEDC.

Senator Ezea expressed his gratitude towards President Tinubu, stating, “I’m immeasurably pleased with the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for signing into law the South-East Development Commission Bill. With this assent, our efforts in the National Assembly have yielded fruit, as the South-East Development Commission Act has now come into being.”

He further elaborated on the significance of this development for the South East, including his constituents in the Enugu North senatorial district. “This is a joyful time for all South-East indigenes, including the people of Enugu North senatorial district. We hope that the new SEDC will be adequately funded so it could temper the cries of marginalization in the South-East since the end of the civil war in 1970.”

Senator Ezea is optimistic that the commission will effectively tackle the region’s infrastructure deficits. “The problems of erosion, bad roads, and other infrastructure deficits in the South-East, we expect, would be tackled head-on. Consequently, we in the South-East should hope to enjoy a new era of peace and security for a long time to come.”

He concluded his statement with congratulations to his fellow lawmakers, acknowledging their collective effort in the realization of the SEDC Act. “Congratulations to fellow South-East lawmakers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives on this successful effort.”

The establishment of the South East Development Commission marks a significant milestone for the region, promising improvements in infrastructure and fostering a sense of inclusion and security among its people.
