Hundreds of protesters took to Bauchi Road in Jos, Plateau state capital, on Sunday, demanding that local business owners either join their protest on Monday or close shop for the day.
The demonstration was sparked by dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday address, which protesters felt failed to address urgent national issues.
The protesters, a mix of adults and youths, carried placards, leaves, and international flags as they marched through the streets, urging, “No business tomorrow. Everyone should come out for the protest.” Their primary demands include the removal of the fuel subsidy and enhanced measures to address insecurity in the country.
Tinubu, in his address, defended the removal of the fuel subsidy, calling it a necessary but painful decision due to its detrimental impact on the nation’s economic development. He also announced the abolition of multiple foreign exchange systems, describing these steps as essential to overcoming economic hurdles.
According to Daily Trust, the protest in Plateau has remained largely peaceful, with no significant incidents of violence reported.
