Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, shared an official statement via his X account announcing his participation in the 2024 International Leaders Forum (ILF).

The event, held in Chicago, Illinois, from August 19-22, 2024, coincides with the Democratic National Convention. Obi was personally invited by the Board of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), alongside two other prominent Nigerians and over 200 distinguished political leaders from 91 countries, including former heads of state.

Expressing gratitude, Obi acknowledged Senator Thomas Daschle and NDI for the invitation, noting the institute’s longstanding commitment to involving senior politicians and policymakers in observing the U.S. democratic process. The ILF provides a platform for global leaders from diverse backgrounds to foster relationships through shared experiences and discuss pressing issues affecting democratic institutions and values.

As NDI President Tamara Wittes highlighted, “Democracy thrives on collective decision-making and fostering trust, even amidst differing viewpoints.” This theme was explored through presentations by notable figures, including DNC Chair Jamie Harrison, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and former heads of state from Denmark and Kosovo, among others.

Obi expressed his excitement to contribute to the dialogue, noting that the forum presents a valuable opportunity for African leaders to share insights and learn from established democratic practices. He looks forward to fruitful discussions on global democracy and building resilient institutions.
