Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on journalists to be at the forefront of defending democracy and ensuring inclusivity for all Nigerians.
Speaking during a visit to News Central TV’s headquarters in Lagos on Monday, September 9, 2024, Obi highlighted the critical role of the media in nation-building.
“We can’t build this country without sacrifices from all of us, and the fourth estate is very critical to this,” Obi stated, underscoring the importance of the press in fostering a stronger Nigeria.
Obi urged the media to bridge ethnic and religious divisions, emphasizing that unity is essential to overcoming the nation’s challenges. He expressed concern over the widespread suffering, hunger, and hardships across the country, calling for urgent solutions.
The Labour Party leader also stressed the need for strong leadership in Nigeria, pointing out that collective efforts are vital for progress. “If we have leaders who prioritize the country’s welfare over personal interests, Nigeria will thrive, and the people will enjoy a better life,” he added.
Obi further recognized the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians, sharing an inspiring story of a Nigerian entrepreneur he met in Rwanda who is making a positive impact, demonstrating the resilience and potential of the nation’s citizens.
