The Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee has demanded that Julius Abure stop presenting himself as the national chairman, stating that his tenure officially ended on June 9, 2024. This was announced during a press conference held by the Labour Party’s National Transitional Committee (NTC) in Abuja.
Salisu Mohammad, the Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, disclosed that the decision was reached at a stakeholder meeting in Umuahia, presided over by the party’s legitimate Caretaker Committee led by Nenadi Usman. Mohammad highlighted that the NTC has been actively engaging with stakeholders to help the party recover from what he described as Abure’s unlawful actions and corrupt practices.
According to Mohammad, Abure took over as national chairman after the unexpected death of the previous chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2020. However, Abure has led the party without undergoing an election, despite calls from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for him to step down.
The NTC’s actions led to the convening of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Umuahia. The Nigerian Labour Congress, acting as the party’s Trustee, endorsed the NEC’s decision at its September 4, 2024, meeting and supported the formation of a 29-member Caretaker Committee tasked with organizing democratic congresses at the ward, local government, state, and national levels.
Mohammad further stated that the NEC meeting, convened by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, was a crucial intervention to rescue the party from what he called “unlawful activities.” He emphasized that this move aligns with the democratic will of millions of Nigerians who do not want the party to be destroyed by political operatives.
