The Police Service Commission (PSC) has sent a dedicated monitoring team to Edo State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, with a clear mandate to oversee the conduct of police officers on electoral duty.
Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC, emphasized that the team’s presence serves as a warning to police officers. Any misconduct or dereliction of duty will result in disciplinary measures.
“The team is here to ensure that police personnel maintain neutrality and professionalism throughout the election,” Ani stated. Monitors will be stationed across the state’s three senatorial districts, ensuring that officers are held accountable for their actions before, during, and after the election.
Police officers on duty are expected to remain impartial, safeguarding voters and voting materials while ensuring a peaceful and orderly election process. Officers must also allow voters unrestricted access to cast their ballots.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Lakanu, who is leading the delegation, urged officers to remain civil, smart, and firm in enforcing electoral laws. He reminded them of their pivotal role in maintaining internal security, particularly during elections, and stressed that the success of the Edo election hinges on the police’s professionalism.
Lakanu further warned that any officer failing to meet the required standards will face disciplinary action, while those who demonstrate exemplary conduct will be commended.
To foster transparency, the PSC has made available dedicated telephone lines for the public to report any misconduct or offer commendations regarding police conduct during the election. These numbers are organized by region, allowing citizens to connect directly with the Commission’s situation room in Benin.
This monitoring initiative aligns with the Commission’s commitment to ensuring police integrity and safeguarding the nation’s democracy during electoral processes.
“He said the Commission will also commend Officers who exhibit an examplary conduct during the elections.
“Meanwhile, the Commission has released dedicated telephone numbers for Nigerians to reach the Commission’s situation room in Benin to present their complaints or commendations on the conduct of Police Officers during the election. The numbers are: State Coordinator: 08064696711
