Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, has emphasized the need for transparency from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free and fair elections.

After voting at Oredo Ward 6, Unit 11 during the ongoing governorship election in Edo State, Akpata expressed optimism about the voting process but plans to await feedback from his party agents deployed across the state’s 192 wards and 4,500 polling units.

He stated, “We hope every Edo voter has a similar experience, and I urge INEC to maintain a level playing field—no undue advantages for anyone. All party agents should have access to collation centers.”

Akpata highlighted that it is crucial for agents from all parties to witness the collation process, ensuring it aligns with legal standards as stipulated in the electoral act and constitution. “INEC has no excuses; this off-cycle election gives them the opportunity to utilize their resources effectively,” he said, adding that the eyes of the nation are on INEC to perform well.

He also raised concerns regarding the substantial security presence in Edo, questioning whether it serves the public interest or benefits specific individuals.
