Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has sounded an alarm over what he describes as a coordinated plot to disrupt the local government elections scheduled for tomorrow, October 5, 2024.
In a statement shared on his X handle, the Governor accused certain officers of the Nigeria Police Force, both from the state command and the Force Headquarters in Abuja, of conspiring with external forces to instigate chaos in the state.
Fubara revealed that in the early hours of Friday, October 4, 2024, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office was invaded by these forces with the aim of seizing sensitive election materials. The intent, he claimed, was to derail the election process.
However, according to the Governor, the swift response and collective resistance of Rivers citizens helped prevent the theft and ensured that the election preparations could continue.
During a press conference addressing the incident, Fubara reassured the public that the election would proceed as planned, despite the Nigeria Police Force withdrawing its officers from election duties, citing a federal court ruling. The Governor expressed confidence that other security agencies would step in to provide the necessary security to ensure voters’ safety during the election.
