The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has publicly addressed and dismissed media claims regarding the appointment of his daughter, Helen Eno-Obareki, as the state’s First Lady.
During a condolence visit from Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, Eno clarified that his daughter, who serves as a Special Assistant to her late mother, is positioned to coordinate the Office of the First Lady due to her close involvement and experience.
Eno explained that his daughter, who previously served as the Special Assistant to her late mother, is in the best position to manage the responsibilities of the office. He emphasized that this decision was made naturally, rather than for political reasons, following the passing of his wife, the former First Lady.
“First Ladies are not appointed; they come with the Governor,” Eno stated. He reiterated that Mrs. Obareki’s appointment as Coordinator stems from her close working relationship with her late mother and her extensive experience in supporting the First Lady’s initiatives.
Governor Eno stressed that his late wife’s key projects, including the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), support for women, the elderly, and vulnerable groups, would continue under Obareki’s coordination. He expressed confidence that her familiarity with the office’s operations and her education would ensure the sustainability and growth of these programs.
“This is not a political appointment; it is a natural progression. My daughter will bring innovation to the role and ensure that these important initiatives do not falter,” the governor added.
Eno concluded by reiterating the need for clarity on the matter, emphasizing that the decision was intended to bring healing to his family and maintain the continuity of the First Lady’s office.
