Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers, has expressed support for the appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This decision comes after the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Debo Ologunagba, made the change to replace the suspended Damagum, amid a turbulent session that revealed deep divisions within the party.
Ologunagba announced the appointment, stating, “The appointment, which takes immediate effect, is pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).” The change also included the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
In his remarks, Ologunagba reiterated the approval of Mohammed’s appointment, emphasizing the party’s need to unite after the suspension of Damagum. Ugochinyere responded positively, noting that PDP members, supporters, and stakeholders were pleased with the new leadership. He called upon PDP Governors and other key figures to convene and prevent Damagum, whom he accused of acting as an agent for the All Progressives Congress (APC), from further undermining the party.
“The news of Damagum’s suspension is a welcome development; there’s jubilation everywhere. PDP faithful, supporters, and stakeholders are very happy,” Ugochinyere stated. He criticized Damagum for allegedly collaborating with opponents to weaken the party’s prospects for the upcoming 2027 elections. He expressed optimism that with Damagum’s removal, the PDP could begin its transformation after enduring significant challenges attributed to what he termed Damagum’s anti-party activities and alliances with political adversaries, including Nyesom Wike.
In a counter-move, supporters of Damagum suspended Ologunagba and Kamaldeen Ajibade, the National Legal Adviser of the party. Furthermore, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a restraining order preventing the PDP from removing Damagum from his position pending the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings. Justice Peter Lifu granted the order following an ex parte application from disgruntled party members Umar Maina and Zanna Gaddama.
