President Bola Tinubu’s past drug case could be revisited following President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive strategy to combat the drug epidemic in the United States.

In his latest remarks, Trump declared a “full-scale war on drug cartels,” emphasizing a ruthless crackdown on traffickers who, according to him, are wreaking havoc on American society.

This development comes as President Joe Biden’s administration has faced criticism for obstructing the release of Tinubu’s 1993 drug case file during Nigeria’s presidential court tribunal.

Tinubu, who was allegedly arrested and charged with drug trafficking and money laundering in the U.S. in the ’90s, could see his case come under new scrutiny.

Trump’s strategy includes the deployment of U.S. military forces to enforce a naval blockade in the Western Hemisphere, aimed at stopping cartels from trafficking drugs into the U.S. He also proposed to designate major drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, intensifying the pressure on global financial systems used by these groups.

In his speech, Trump accused the Biden administration of enabling cartels, claiming their profits have skyrocketed under current policies. He vowed to eliminate cartel operations with the same aggression used to dismantle ISIS, stressing the importance of securing borders and forging international partnerships to curb the flow of illicit drugs. Trump also proposed legislation for the death penalty for drug traffickers and human smugglers.

As the drug crisis escalates, Trump’s bold measures signal a return to stringent policies, with global and domestic implications, including the possible reopening of high-profile cases like Tinubu’s.
