Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has reiterated the need for urgent investment in food production following a visit to Mary Agro Farms in Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State.

In a statement issued after attending the Peaceland University conference in Enugu, Obi recounted his experience at Mary Agro Farms, tracing its transformation since his initial visit to their pilot scheme in Udi over two years ago. Back then, he had supported the farm’s innovative approach to agriculture. Now, seeing its permanent site, he was impressed by the significant expansion of operations and the farm’s commitment to excellence and growth.

Highlighting the farm’s achievements, Obi emphasized the critical role of innovative farming in addressing food security challenges. To further support the farm’s efforts, he donated ₦20 million, urging the team to remain resilient and productive.

“This critical period of severe hunger, food scarcity, and inflation requires us to support initiatives like this,” Obi stated, while referencing warnings from global organizations about an impending hunger crisis.

He cited alarming reports, including one from the United Nations predicting that at least 33 million Nigerians could face extreme hunger by 2025, and a Save the Children International report forecasting that 5.4 million Nigerian children risk acute malnutrition within the same timeframe.

Peter Obi called on governments at all levels to take measurable actions to mitigate the food crisis by prioritizing investment in agriculture.

Praising the management and staff of Mary Agro Farms for their steadfast dedication, he concluded, “A New, Well-Fed Nigeria Remains Possible.”
