The Rivers State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, operating under the umbrella of Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers, has announced its intention to produce the next President-General of the organization following the death of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the 11th President-General.
This move aligns with the rotational leadership structure outlined in Article 11 of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Constitution, which calls for a rotation of leadership among the seven member states.
In a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, the group reaffirmed Rivers State’s rightful membership in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, citing its longstanding support for other states in producing national officers. The communiqué was signed by Livingstone Wechie, Convener of Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers, and Barrister Anthony Okolo, National Coordinator of Anyi-Anyi, a pan-Igbo advocacy group.
Wechie emphasized the group’s firm belief in the importance of adhering to the Constitution for a harmonious and prosperous future for Ohanaeze. “We strongly believe that strict adherence to the Constitution will ensure a harmonious, peaceful, and prosperous Ohanaeze, both now and in the future. We appeal to all stakeholders to uphold this principle. May God help us all,” he stated.
The call for a Rivers State candidate comes in the wake of Chief Iwuanyanwu’s passing, which has created a leadership vacuum within Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The group argued that the election of a Rivers State Igbo would foster continuity and inclusivity, ensuring that the organization remains united.
Rivers State has a long history of contributing to the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with its members having previously held key roles such as Deputy Secretary-General, National Financial Secretary, Secretary-General, and Deputy President-General. “Rivers State’s experience and dedication to the organization make it an ideal candidate to produce the next President-General,” Wechie added.
The group has called for a free, fair, and transparent election on January 10, 2025, stressing the need for unity and equitable representation of all Igbos.
In a related development, Anyi-Anyi has proposed a symposium on December 7, 2024, to discuss the leadership transition. Okolo emphasized the significance of Rivers State’s claim and the need for widespread consultations and community outreach to solidify the position. The symposium will also include town-hall meetings and visits to strategic stakeholders. Additionally, Okolo called for robust security measures during the event to ensure law and order.
As the election approaches, Rivers State’s push for the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo highlights a pivotal moment in strengthening the unity and representation of Igbos across Nigeria.
