Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed for a second term as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The Geneva-based trade organization announced the decision on Friday via a post on X, stating, “Members today agreed to give incumbent Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala a second term as Director-General of the WTO.”
Her new term, approved during a special general council meeting, will commence on September 1, 2025, and span four years.
At 70, Okonjo-Iweala was the sole candidate for the prestigious role. Despite this, she required unanimous backing from all 166 WTO member countries, including the United States, to secure the reappointment.
Okonjo-Iweala initially took office in March 2021, marking a historic milestone as both the first African and the first woman to lead the organization.
