Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed profound sorrow over a devastating boat accident that claimed numerous lives along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger.

In a statement released during his journey to Yola, Adamawa State, where he was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the 16th Founder’s Day Lecture commemorating the 20th anniversary of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Obi described the incident as heartbreaking.

The tragedy, which occurred yesterday, involved a boat carrying approximately 200 individuals, predominantly market women and farmers transporting produce to the market.

“My heart goes out to the families affected by this tragedy,” Obi stated. “These are already challenging times, and the loss of loved ones only deepens the pain. My sincere prayers are with you all.”

He also extended his condolences to the government and people of Niger State, urging divine strength for those impacted and eternal rest for the departed.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities relying on waterways for transportation, highlighting the need for increased safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
