Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has officially distanced itself from the activities of Simon Ekpa, who is currently in detention in Finland on allegations of terrorism.

In a statement made to the press in Awka, the Vice President of Ohanaeze, Damian Okeke Ogene, expressed the group’s disapproval of Ekpa’s actions.

He emphasized that Ohanaeze Ndigbo had no connection to Ekpa, noting that his activities had negatively impacted the economy of the South-East. Ogene further criticized Ekpa for his inconsistent stance, comparing him unfavorably to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has consistently engaged with the group.

“We are not concerned about Simon Ekpa’s arrest in Finland,” Ogene remarked. “Someone who has caused so much harm to the economy of the Southeast. We don’t know him because he hasn’t shown consistency like Nnamdi Kanu, who has always interacted with us. Ekpa claims to be a content creator, so maybe he should join Nollywood instead. We want Nnamdi Kanu released, so he can clarify who his supporters are.”

Ogene also used the opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government for more decisive action regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s release. He stated that the current lack of progress on the issue was hindering the security and stability of the entire Southeast region, which in turn, was limiting socio-economic growth and development.

Additionally, Ogene called on South-East governors to work together and establish a robust security framework to address crime and ensure long-term peace in the region.

Regarding the leadership transition within Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ogene announced that Imo State would hold the presidency of the group for a two-month period to complete the tenure originally held by the late Prof. Obiozor and Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, both of whom were from Imo. He urged Ndigbo to support Imo in fulfilling this responsibility.

“Imo State has been zoned to complete the tenure of the late Iwuanyanwu,” Ogene stated. “We assure you that Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains united and intact, with no leadership crisis. The leadership structure and process for all positions are clearly outlined in our constitution.”

Ogene concluded by reiterating that all leadership positions within the organization are zoned to states, not individuals. He confirmed that the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership would continue to ensure that the group’s collective interests are safeguarded.
