The Nigeria Police Force has arrested prominent lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi after a defamation petition was filed by billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu.

According to report Dele Farotimi was arrested over a petition by Tony Elumelu of UBA Group, alleging defamation.

Farotimi revealed in X post that he was initially invited by the Zone 2 Police Command on November 11 and was instructed to report to the station on November 13. Complying with the directive, he attended with his legal counsel and was confronted with a defamation allegation contained in a petition written by Elumelu’s lawyer.

He was granted bail on self-recognizance and instructed to return on November 21.

On November 21, Farotimi appeared at the station again, accompanied by his legal counsel, and was permitted to leave after the session.

Concerns are mounting regarding the implications of this arrest for free speech and human rights in Nigeria, as Farotimi’s case highlights ongoing tensions between activists and powerful individuals.
