Dele Farotimi’s book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System has skyrocketed to bestseller status on Amazon amid his ongoing defamation case with prominent lawyer Afe Babalola.

According to report, Farotimi remains in detention following his arrest, which stems from a petition filed by Babalola. The senior lawyer claims the book defames him, alleging that its content and accompanying media interviews were crafted to tarnish his reputation.

“All these statements are false and deliberately written to destroy my reputation. Dele Farotimi referred to me several times in his book as the Doyen of the legal profession,” Babalola asserted.

Despite the controversy, Farotimi’s arrest has spurred widespread interest in the book. Published in July 2024, the book delves into systemic corruption within Nigeria’s judiciary, citing alleged misconduct involving legal elites. Previously struggling with low sales, the book witnessed a meteoric rise in popularity after Farotimi’s detention brought it into the public eye.

Reports indicate that Farotimi was arraigned in Ekiti on Wednesday and has been remanded in custody until his bail hearing, set for December 10.

The case has triggered public outrage, with numerous Nigerians demanding Farotimi’s immediate release and calling attention to the issues raised in his book. The newfound attention highlights a growing public desire to confront judicial corruption and engage with the debates Farotimi’s work seeks to ignite.
