Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has suggested that Nigeria falls short of practicing true democracy compared to the United States.

The singer shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on The Morning Hustle podcast, highlighting the stark differences he perceives between the democratic processes of both nations.

Davido recounted congratulating Donald Trump following his 2016 electoral victory, despite personally supporting his opponent, Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party.

“I congratulated Donald Trump. That’s the president! What are you talking about? If I were running against him, I would still have congratulated him,” Davido said.

He expressed admiration for the robustness of the American democratic system, contrasting it with the state of democracy in Nigeria.

“What I like about America is that there’s true democracy. Where I come from [Nigeria], it’s not so,” he noted.

The artist further revealed his personal reason for voting in the election, sharing his hopes to witness a historic milestone.

“To be honest, I voted for Kamala Harris because I wanted to see the first female president in my generation. That would have been cool,” he added.
